“One day Jesus called together his twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and to heal all diseases.”~ Luke 9:1
Last Sunday, towards the end of our church service, our pastors wife had a powerful word for us. She confessed that she was not sure how to cast out a demon from someone. She then asked the congregation for anyone that felt confident casting out demons to come up front. I didn’t even hesitate as I got out of my seat and walked up front. There were quite a few others. She then addressed the rest of the parishioners, “if you want to learn how to cast out demons, come up front to one of these people and ask them to teach you. How can we be a victorious church if we don’t know how to fight our battles.” My heart leaped with joy as I watched so many come forward.
The body of Christ must learn to live in the power and authority that Jesus summons us to.
If you don’t know how to cast out demons, you aren’t alone. Most Christians do not understand spiritual warfare, and are even afraid of the devil and his evil forces. I, on the other hand, was thrown into a deliverance and healing ministry as a baby Christian. I learned as a young Christian how to walk in confidence (in Christ) to cast out demons. It’s a gift to be able to help my brothers and sisters in Christ find freedom through deliverance prayers.
In Luke 9:1 the Bible says, “Jesus called together His twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and to heal all diseases.” From this verse we know that we have been given power and authority by our Lord Jesus to cast out demons and heal the sick. Jesus has not changed. He is the same God today as the God that said those words thousands of years ago. We can have faith that Jesus is telling us, His followers, to cast out demons as His command for us. In order to cast out demons, we first have to know who we are in Christ.
You can click here to read a blog post I wrote on “Knowing Who I am In Christ.” I encourage you to do more research on understanding who you are in Christ. This is a very important first step.
Many Christians struggle with knowing who they are in Christ. I believe this is because they donβt fully understand their re-birth.
Once you have confidence in your identity in Christ, you will be able to walk in the power and authority you have been given by Him. We have the the Spirit of Jesus living inside of us. It is His power and authority that we operate in when casting out demons. It is never in our own power or strength. This is why it is so important to be led by the Holy Spirit and to always use the name of Jesus when praying for demons to leave.
The Bible says to be “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Be watchful and attentive. When you feel discouragement pulling you down, or your peace being robbed, this is a warning to you that the enemy is trying to attack you. For example, if I start to feel confused about a situation, I recognize that the enemy is striking. Doubt, disbelief, confusion, apathy, fear, are never from God, but always from the devil. They are demons. Demons are sneaky and harass God’s people in many different ways. Sometimes it’s through an offense, or unrest in a relationship. We must be wise in recognizing Satan’s bait. He, unfortunately has many.
Do not be intimidated by Satan, for God has told you, “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. Greater is He that is in you.” (1 John 4:4)
After you have a strong assurance of who you are as a child of Gods, and you are aware of Satan’s attack, the next thing is to be confident to speak directly to the demon (s). Jesus spoke directly to evil spirits (Matthew 4). We must as well. Jesus also never prayed for healing or deliverance. He confronted the devil with Scripture or He commanded the devil to leave. We must too.
You don’t have to be afraid to talk directly to demons. You’re not having a conversation with them, you are simply following Jesus’s ways and commanding them to leave (in Jesus’s name, power and authority).
Here’s an example of how I cast out a demon. Let’s say I’m feeling down and depressed, anxious and worried. I recognize these emotions as the enemy’s fiery darts. With certainty, I say out loud, “Satan, you listen to me! I command you to take your evil spirits of depression, anxiety, worry and fear (make sure to call out each demon by name) and in Jesus Christ’s name, GET OUT and do not come back. By Jesus’s authority and power given to me, I cancel your assignment over me. You must go now in Jesus’s name. I belong to Jesus and am covered under His blood as a hedge of protection.” And then I go about my day.
Sometimes after we have cast out a demon, nothing changes. Be patient. Some demons are stubborn and will “test” you. Keep walking as if you feel better. Keep believing your prayer was heard, because it was. There are times you may have to pray again. That’s okay too.
The key to casting out a demon is to be confident that you have been given the power and authority by God Himself to do so.
Dear brothers and sisters, if you want to live as a victorious Christian you have to know the power and authority that you have in Christ so that you can fight the enemy. I pray against any fear the enemy may try to impose on you as you work on becoming the warrior for Jesus that you are. God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). You have a mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). To be triumphant you must learn how to cast out demons like Jesus did.
I echo my pastor’s wife’s words-how can we be a victorious church if we don’t know how to cast out demons?
To live in the fullness of Christ, we need wisdom and knowledge to fight our spiritual battles. May the Lord fill us up with the power of the Holy Spirit so that we would be fully equipped to do all that He has called us to. May our daily prayer be “God, give us more of the Holy Spirit power, anointing and discernment to do your will here on earth as it is in Heaven.”
βGet out of here, Satan,β Jesus told him.” ~ Matthew 4:10

Thank you for tackling a tough subject that is often avoided and sometimes even denied in Christian circles. I especially liked that you emphasize the first step of knowing who we are in Christ. We are definitely in a spiritual war and must be prepared and wearing the armor God gave us at all times. Thank you for reminding us.
