“The things you read will fashion you by slowly conditioning your mind”. A.W. Tozer
Have you ever read a book and something written in it changed your life? I have always loved reading books and many of them have brought me tremendous healing. Some authors just know exactly what to say and write in such a way that their words resonate effectively with your heart.
Here are ten books that have helped me heal emotionally, spiritually and physically. These authors have inspired, encouraged and empathized with my own personal suffering. I thank God for these authors and the books they were inspired to write.
- The Path Of Loneliness by Elisabeth Elliot
I know I’m not alone in the fight against loneliness. Many struggle with feeling alone. I have lived most of my life feeling lonely. You would never know it though because I hid it well, from the world, and sometimes even from myself.
In fact the very first blog I ever posted was titled “The Battle of Loneliness.” I praise the Lord for having helped me through a lot of healing since I wrote that post in 2012. One of the things God used was this book on loneliness by Elisabeth Elliot.
I discovered it during one of the darkest seasons of my life. I was facing a lot of loss, having been stripped of my marriage (we were separated again), and all that was familiar to me, including my surroundings (we had moved to a new city after having lived 25 years in the same area). On top of this my father had passed away and a dear friend suddenly had no time for me. I felt so alone and lonely I thought I wouldn’t survive. However, by the power of the Holy Spirit, I clung to Jesus with everything in me. He was faithful to my cries.
“To know God, or even to begin to know Him, is to know that we are not alone in the universe.” ~ Elisabeth Elliot
2. A Place of Healing by Joni Eareckson Tada
It was during this same season of grief and loss that I was led to Joni Eareckson Tada’s book on healing. For those that may not know, Joni Eareckson Tada at the age of 17 became a quadriplegic after a diving accident. Joni turned to Jesus during her suffering and continues to fight with chronic pain even today. In this book I found a new perspective on suffering, divine healing and how to live in joy despite my circumstances.
“He has chosen not to heal me, but to hold me. The more intense the pain, the closer His embrace.”- Joni Eareckson Tada
3. Getting Out of Bed in the Morning: Reflections of Comfort in Heartache by Alice J. Wisler
There are times in life when no matter how strong our faith is, we still cannot muster up the strength to persevere. “Getting Out of Bed in the Morning” was a soothing balm for my aching heart during a very dark season. It is written in devotional format which makes it easier to read during difficult times. I cannot express enough my gratitude for this author’s writing. She literally helped me get out of bed and face life with hope and purpose.
“God meets us wherever we are and no amount of disbelief, anger, or frustration keeps Him from loving His children.” ~ Alice J. Wisler
4. Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle in Your Mind by Joyce Meyer
There is an invisible war going on around us, a battle known as “Spiritual Warfare.” Worry, doubt, confusion, depression, anger, and feelings of condemnation are some of the tactics the enemy uses to attack us and rob us of our joy. This invisible battle is fought in our our mind. This book helped me understand spiritual warfare and my role in it. Joyce Meyer taught me to become acutely aware of my thoughts. It is truly a life changing read that helps me find freedom and peace even today.
“The mind is the battlefield. It is a vital necessity that we line up our thoughts with God’s thoughts.” ~ Joyce Meyer
5. Destroying the Spirit of Rejection: Receive Love and Acceptance and Find Healing by John Eckhardt
The pain of rejection can cut deep. Rejection is like a bad seed that gets planted in your heart. Like weeds in a garden, rejection can choke the beauty within you, crowding out the person God created you to be. Rejection is a demonic spirit that can wreak havoc on your life without you even realizing it. I know, because I am still working on finding healing by rooting out weeds of rejection in my life. This is an excellent aide to help you overcome any rejection issues you may have.
“No matter how much desolation, ruin, pain, hurt, and rejection has come into your life, God is able to restore and heal you.” ~ John Eckhardt
6. Fully Alive: Learning to Flourish-Mind, Body, and Spirit by Susie Larson
We all know that our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being are tightly intertwined. In this book Susie Larson takes a holistic approach to our health from a Christian perspective. She encourages her readers to have redemptive thoughts for their lives, regardless of where you are with your health. Having had many health issues herself, she has learned how to thrive with Jesus and to find health, freedom and wholeness. This is an extremely encouraging book for anyone that is looking for healing for their mind, body or spirit.
(As a side note, Susie Larson has written several of my favorite books. Her style of writing and her heart resonates with me, and so I highly recommend any of her books.)
“No matter what ails us-be it emotionally, physically, or circumstantially- God has more for us. We’re not meant to stay stuck here.” ~ Susie Larson
7. Power Healing by John Wimber
This is an inspiring book on the power of supernatural healing. Wimber gives practical steps for divine healing. He covers how healing is found in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. This book opened up my heart and mind to how much more there is to the kingdom of God here on earth. What Jesus said, in Luke 9:1, “Jesus told His disciples to One day Jesus called together his twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and to heal all diseases,” is still true for us, His followers, today.
“I urge you to seek the Lord and Lifegiver Himself, Jesus Christ. That way, regardless of the visible results, your prayers will always have power for healing.” ~ John Wimber
8. Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas
This is honestly the best book I’ve read on Christian Marriages. Gary Thomas poses the question “What if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy?” This book changed my perspective on my own marriage as I began to understand that God uses our spouses to grow us into His likeness. This book won’t tell you how to build a better marriage, but it will show you how your marriage can help deepen your relationship with God.
“Your marriage is more than a sacred covenant with another person.” ~Gary Thomas
9. The House Is Quiet, Now What? by Janice Hanna and Kathleen Y’Barbo
When all of our kids left home (as they should), it was extremely painful for me. No one had prepared me for how hard it would be to let them go. I wrote several blogs on this topic (you can click here and here to read a few). If you are suffering the empty nest syndrome, know that you are not alone in your sorrow. This book helped me so much during this time of transition. The authors give biblically based guidance, hope and encouragement.
“Peer over the edge of that nest, Mama Bird, the skies ahead are bright and sunny.” ~ Janice Hanna
10. The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson
We all have dreams, but do you realize that those dreams may have been planted within you by the Lord? In this book Bruce Wilkinson suggest that God put those dreams within us before we were even born so that they would become a part of our destiny and bring God glory. This book encouraged me to fulfill my dream of writing. I realized, after reading this book, that I have enjoyed writing since I was a little girl in elementary school.
“Are you living your dream? Or just living your life?“~ Bruce Wilkinson
These are ten powerful books that God has used in my life to give me hope and encouragement. Books are impactful and can help redirect our thinking and our lives. If you are struggling in any of these areas, I hope you pick up one of these and find strength to persevere. Life can be challenging, but the Lord is mighty and He has raised up writers to help us along our journey here on earth. Keep in mind, the very best book written is the one by God Himself-the Holy Bible. All the books in the whole world will never compare to this one. God’s Word is alive and God speaks to us uniquely through them. This is the one book that will bring the most healing to our heart and soul. One reason why we ought to read it daily and several times a day.
I am always looking for Christian books to read. Please feel free to share in a comment after this post, any titles of books that have brought you healing.
“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” ~ John 1:1

What a brilliant post about helpful books one can choose from. I’m interested in reading the first book you mentioned concerning loneliness. It’s been a companion during many times in my life, and sometimes the loneliness has been painful and depressing. Another book that sounds promising is Fully Alive then Getting out of bed in the morning as I’ve struggled to ‘sleep the world away’ and stay in bed some. Appreciate you taking the time to describe each book and let us know how it could benefit one’s life.
On another note, I believe we have a mutual friend, Gene-fir Reisinger. Does that name sound familiar?
Blessings to you Tweeny

Hello Elizabeth. Thank you for your kind words. I hope you will purchase and read some of these suggested books. They truly changed my life. And yes, we know Gene-fir-Reisinger from way back! She was our daughters youth group leader. What a gem of a person. Tell her hello from me if you see her again. Blessings to you too Elizabeth! 🙂
