“Gratitude is at the center of a life of faith. It sounds too simple to be true, but isn’t that the sign of all deep truth: so simple we’re tempted to dismiss it, and so hard, it is exactly what God uses to change our hard lives.” ~ Ann Voskamp
A few months ago I read something about thankfulness that energized my faith in an unexpected way. Author, Carol Kent, in her devotional He Holds My Hand, suggests going through your day, looking for specific ways that God is blessing you. When you discover these treasures, collect them-one by one- until you have a beautiful bouquet. Then each night, before going to bed, envision laying this bouquet of thanksgiving at God’s feet.
Creating beautiful bouquets of thanksgiving to lay at God’s feet each night will take your faith to a deeper level. This is because gratitude is a simple but powerful tool that God can use to enhance our lives.
Although my bedtime routine has always included giving thanks to the Lord, the visual of creating a bouquet of thanksgiving for God has enriched my faith.
There are three important reasons why envisioning a bouquet of thanksgiving to the Lord is so powerful. The first is that, by nature, most of us are visual individuals. We tend to remember things better, and maybe even feel them more intimately, when we have a word picture in our minds and heart. I’ve noticed that as I’ve been practicing this visualization of making a bouquet of thanksgiving, I am more grateful. Imagining each blessing as a collection of “flowers” fills my heart with an abundance of praise towards God.
The second reason envisioning a bouquet of thanksgiving for God is so encouraging, is that you are inviting peace into your heart as you slumber. There is a lot of stress in our daily routine and sometimes it can be hard to wind down and feel God’s peace. However, a heart full of thanks, puts everything in perspective. Life won’t feel so heavy as you realize how much you have to be thankful for.
Giving thanks to the Lord brings Him pleasure and in His presence you will find abiding joy.
Thirdly, envisioning a bouquet of thanksgiving to the Lord each night increases our faith. A life lived in thanksgiving is a life surrendered to God’s will. 1 Thessalonians tells us, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. A life surrendered to the Lord, is a life that is fully satisfied with Him and all that He has allowed in your life. The truth is, we have all that we need in a rich relationship with Christ.
We have been given the most precious gift of all-Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross for you and I, so that we could live forever in eternity with Him in Heaven.
In Him we can live in peace knowing He will always be with us to provide and protect us all the days of our lives. God tells us many times to be thankful. Philippians 4:4 says, “rejoice always!”
There is always something to be thankful for. Some of the blessings in my life are simple things like the opportunity to talk to a friend, the ability to go for a walk, or having three healthy meals. You can get creative as you make your bouquet of thanksgiving to the Lord. Some days my bouquet is very big. For example recently our first grandchild was born. My heart is overflowing with gratitude to be a grandmother now. When our granddaughter was born, I envisioned giving the Lord the most gorgeous radiant bouquet imaginable.
What are you thankful for today? What blessing has surprised you, cheered you, and made your heart overflow with gratefulness? Be sure to collect these treasures one by one and envision a beautiful bouquet that each night, before going to bed, you are laying at God’s feet. You will see your life change, because gratitude is a powerful tool in fighting the hardships in life. Gratitude helps us to surrender and focus on God’s faithfulness. Doing this will allow you to create beautiful bouquets of thanksgiving for the Lord all the days of your life.
“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening.” ~ Psalms 92:1-2
