“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires.” ~ Psalm 37:4
A few days ago our eldest son married the woman he loves. Their wedding day felt like heaven had come to earth. It was beautiful. The entire ceremony was blessed by the Lord. I have witnessed God’s promise of Psalm 37:4 so vividly through the individual lives of my son and his wife. They have each brought fresh meaning to this verse, “take delight in the Lord and He will give you your heart’s desires.” They both love God dearly. They both delight in God.
And now God has given them the desires of their hearts, one another in marriage.
Their story is a beautiful love story. They dated in high school for three years, but then broke up for three and a half years. During those years apart they had no interaction with one another and lived their own separate lives.
They tried dating other people, but it never would work out.
However, they lived their lives finding pleasure and fulfillment through their relationship with Jesus.
They relied on His goodness, completely trusting their lives to His plans for them.
Then, three and a half years after their break up, God orchestrated a series of events where both of them ended up being at the same place at the same time for several days in a row.
A spark was ignited within each of them. Or perhaps it never died, I don’t know. In any case, they met for coffee and one thing led to another, and now they are husband and wife, committed to spending the rest of their lives together in holy matrimony.
What does it mean to delight in God?
First of all, know that God wants to give you your deep longings, your inner desires. He enjoys blessing you because He loves you deeply. However, God knows what’s best for you.
In fact, He knows your hearts desires better than you do.
One of the most important thing He wants for you is to have a rich and satisfying relationship with Him. He wants to sit on the throne of your heart, where He rightfully belongs.
Perhaps God is your top priority and you are wondering why He hasn’t blessed you in the ways you have prayed and hoped for.
Sometimes you have to be patient and wait on His best for you. Waiting on God is an act of worship. When we wait with peace in our hearts, we are basically saying to God, I surrender my entire life to You and I trust You with every detail.
God’s never late. His timing is always perfect, because He is perfect.
Delighting in God means surrendering to His will, in all circumstances.
Delighting in God means that you find your joy in Him, no matter what is going on in your life. Even if things aren’t going the way you want them to, your happiness is in Him, not your circumstances or relationships.
Delighting in the Lord means that you love Him so much that you will do anything He asks you too. Yes, anything, even if it means staying single for the rest of your life.
Delighting in the Lord means that you walk in obedience to His Word. This means you are faithful to all He requests, not just to the areas that come easily to you.
Delighting in the Lord means that you are interested in what God is interested in. This means keeping an eternal perspective on life.
Please keep in mind, that God sees the condition of your heart, and what matters to Him is that you are striving to live a life pure before Him. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” When you make Jesus your first love, He will bless you.
When you pray with your palms open, and your heart completely committed to His will, your heart’s desires will begin to line up with His will.
The more you know Him, the more you will fall in love with Him and the more surrendered you will be to His desires.
When you are satisfied in Christ and when you find your joy and peace in Him, He gives you your heart’s desires, because His desires and yours will be one and the same.
Do your part and nurture your relationship with Jesus. Spend quality time daily with Him in His Word and in prayer.
I thank God for the example my son and his beautiful new bride have been to me and to so many. By witnessing their individual walks with the Lord I have been able to see God’s faithfulness to His promise in Psalm 37:4 that when we delight in Him with all of our hearts, He gives us our heart’s desires.
Please leave me a comment below on what delighting in the Lord means to you.
