The message of the season is not, “Let it snow” or even, “Let us shop.” The real message of Christmas is, Let us worship. ~ Good Morning Girls.
Why is it that Christmas is one of the most hectic times for most people?
Instead of “tis the season to be jolly,” it seems to be “tis the season to be busy.”
There are many reasons why most people are busier than usual. There’s decorating to do, parties to attend, cookies to bake, cards to mail, and of course, shopping to do…lots of shopping to do. All of these require our time and attention.
We become distracted and almost numb to the real purpose of Christmas.
Most of us become more like Martha – “distracted by the big dinner she was preparing” – than like Mary, who sat at Jesus’s feet throughout the busyness (to read their story click here).
Like Martha, we become preoccupied with all the preparation for the season. Also like Martha, we are frustrated and in a frenzy about all that there is to do. We lose sight of that which is of most importance.
Since we are distracted by so much, we ignore the Christmas guest of honor, Jesus.
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Jesus came to give His life up as a sacrifice for the sins of man. He came to die so that you and I could live in peace and joy (Luke 2:10-11).
And this is the heart of Christmas.
The truth is, however, that most people feel sad, lonely, and empty during the season of Christmas. It’s the same emptiness that is felt after all the gifts have been opened. It doesn’t matter how expensive the gift was, we still feel a void, deep inside of us.
The emptiness we feel is due to the lack of spiritual connectedness we hunger for with Jesus. We sense this void because nothing can fulfill the longing deep in our hearts except an intimate personal relationship with Christ.
Jesus is the only gift that fulfills the loneliness in our soul.
How would it be if we intentionally experienced the season as Mary would? How would it be if we sat at Jesus’s feet and spend quality time with Him, first?
Our relationship with Jesus is the one thing we need to be concerned about this season. (tweet this)
In the midst of this hectic season how can we be more patient, kind, gentle, loving? We can’t have His inner peace if we are busy and stressed out. We can’t be His light if we are so pre-occupied with our Christmas “to do list.”
As His followers let’s keep ourselves so filled up with Christ’s love so that we can show others who He is.
As His disciples, let’s be so filled with Him that we radiate of His grace.
As Christians let’s show the world who He is by being different so that they will desire to know Him.
Jesus said to Martha, “But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it.“ (Luke 10:41-42).
It’s simple. We have to make the choice to be like Mary and not worry about all the work that needs to be done, but to instead choose to do that which is of most importance ~ sit at the feet of Jesus, and worship Him.
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.” ~ Matthew 1:23
